Sounds : created by the gentle flow of water strategically placed at the front, center, and rear of the residence. Airflow : optimized to ensure natural circulation from front to back, enhancing comfort and freshness. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, with plant choices that not only enhance the tropical ambiance but also naturally filter the air, promoting a healthier and more refreshing living environment. PROJECT NARATION This project began with the client’s intention to develop a private garden that would require both landscape design and approval from the local authorities. The garden was envisioned as a functional outdoor space for the retired residents, while also accommodating the needs of an extended family. The design focused on strengthening the boundaries of the property while transforming the garden into a multifunctional space for everyday family activities. It was planned to provide a safe play area for grandchildren, comfortable seating for family gatherings, and a dedicated space for BBQs and outdoor activities during special family occasions. One of the main challenges was selecting plant species that were both readily available from local nurseries and compliant with the requirements and regulations set by the local authorities. The approval process took approximately two months, during which several design adjustments were made to meet the applicable regulations. Following the approval process and the finalization of the design, the project proceeded to the construction stage, which was carried out by a landscape contractor selected by the client. PROJECT NARATION This project is built on limestone land, making the selection of plant species crucial to ensure their survival and optimal growth. Therefore, plants that are resilient to hot weather, require minimal watering, and can withstand salt-laden air were selected. The chosen species include Crinum, Pandanus, Lily, and Pennisetum. In addition, the treatment of plant canopy characteristics became the second main focus in determining planting positions, considering the limited space and the goal of achieving a maximum green visual impact. Designed as a luxury villa complex with breathtaking views of the southern Bali sea, the estate highlights an exclusive blend of architecture and landscape. The garden embraces a simplicity and contemporary tropical concept , inspired by the collaboration between the lead architect and the landscape architect after a thorough study of the site. With its dramatic limestone terrain, steep contours, and the vision to preserve as many native trees as possible, the design seamlessly integrates with nature. PROJECT NARRATION It began with the construction of two lumbung-style villas which is a traditional Balinese architecture. The client carried a mission to preserve Bali’s authentic architectural heritage by developing villas that would later be rented as a form of cultural conservation. The garden layout was designed to connect the parking area to the villas, passing through the Uluwatu forest and positioned between two pathways leading to the temple and the villa complex . The site’s unique potential inspired a garden design with a central axis, serving as both the main entrance and a focal view towards the Bali Strait. The Balinese lumbung-style villas are unified by pathways made from local limestone and a modern tropical planting composition, creating a balanced relationship between the villa complex and its surrounding forest environment. PROJECT NARRATION This is the second project from our client, who is currently developing a rental accommodation business in Bali. Located in Uluwatu, the apartment offers panoramic views of Bali’s southern coastline. The architectural design adopts a contemporary Australian mid-rise style combined with Balinese architectural influences, reflected in both the conceptual design process and the selection of finishing materials. From the initial narrative, the landscape concept was developed around the idea of creating private outdoor spaces while maximizing the ocean view. The client also wanted abundant natural light throughout the building, including warm afternoon sunlight coming from the west. The use of consistent hardscape materials, with natural tones and simple forms, enhances the calm, spacious, and relaxing atmosphere of the residence. In terms of planting, the entire landscape utilizes resilient, low-water-demand plants. The arrangement adopts an Australian-inspired coastal garden style, combined with tropical planting in areas requiring a clear separation between public and private spaces.
